Description

Flat point grub screws, also known as set screws, are an essential component in mechanical engineering and manufacturing. These screws are typically headless, with their drive (such as a hex socket or slotted drive) recessed into one end. Unlike traditional screws that fasten two surfaces together using a head, grub screws are threaded completely along their length and are designed to be screwed entirely into a tapped hole so that they sit flush with or below the surface.

They are use where parts must be frequently re-set, as it causes little or no damage to part it bears against.

Care must be taken as the bottom threads can deform when the grub screw is tightened which can make disassembly difficult.

Common Applications

These type of  screws are widely used in applications where a component needs to be secured within another without protruding parts. Some typical uses include:

  1. Securing Components on a Shaft: Flat point grub screws are often used to secure pulleys, gears, collars, or knobs onto a rotating shaft. The flat end of the screw presses against the shaft to hold the part in place.

  2. Temporary or Adjustable Fastening: Since the flat point does not permanently mark or damage the surface it contacts, it is ideal for assemblies that may require repositioning or regular adjustments.

  3. Electrical and Electronic Devices: In delicate devices or applications where electrical insulation or conductivity is crucial, flat point grub screws can hold components without causing mechanical damage.

  4. Furniture Assembly: In modular furniture and other joinery applications, these screws can be hidden from view and provide a secure, damage-free joint.

  5. Fixtures and Fittings: Used in lighting systems, fixtures, and other mounted equipment, flat point grub screws can secure items in place without affecting aesthetics.

Advantages of Flat point grub screw

Flat point grub screws offer several benefits, including:

  • Non-Marring Contact: The flat tip is less likely to damage or deform the surface it contacts, making it ideal for delicate or finished surfaces.

  • Reusable and Adjustable: Because they do not leave marks or indentations, components secured with flat point grub screws can often be reused or repositioned without compromising integrity.

  • Low Profile: Being headless, they do not protrude from the surface, allowing for a cleaner and safer design in compact or flush applications.

  • Simple Installation: Typically driven with a hex key or similar tool, flat point grub screws are easy to install and remove.
