Description
Hex long nuts, often referred to as coupling nuts, are extended hexagonal nuts used to connect two pieces of threaded rod or male-threaded fasteners. Unlike standard hex nuts, which are relatively short, hex long nuts are significantly longer, typically several times the diameter of the threads they accommodate. Their primary role is to extend threaded connections and allow for the adjustment, joining, or lengthening of components within various mechanical, structural, and construction systems.
A long nut used to connect pieces of threaded rod or other male threaded fasteners. is widely used for high-end industrial purpose and automobile industry. It can be manufactured using nickel alloy, stainless steel, steel alloy and duplex steel. They may be partially threaded and offer tear long functional life.
These are also known as coupler nuts.
Design and Construction of Hex long nuts
Hex long nuts are characterized by their elongated hexagonal shape and internally threaded bore. The hexagonal exterior allows for easy wrench grip from multiple angles, just like standard hex nuts, while the extra length of the nut provides ample surface area for threading in both directions. Most long nuts are fully threaded internally, although in some cases, a stop feature (a non-threaded midpoint) is used to prevent over-insertion from either side.
Standard lengths of hex long nuts vary depending on the application, but they are generally 2 to 3 times the nominal diameter of the thread. For example, a 1/2″ hex long nut may be 1.5″ or more in length.
Common Applications of Hex long nuts
Hex long nuts are widely used in various industries due to their adaptability. Typical applications include:
1. Construction and Structural Work
In construction, hex long nuts connect long runs of threaded rods that are used to suspend or brace structural elements like ceilings, pipe supports, HVAC equipment, and lighting fixtures.
2. Mechanical and Industrial Equipment
Coupling nuts are found in machinery assemblies to join components across spans or to create linkages with precise alignment. They’re useful where space or flexibility is needed in assembling parts.
3. Plumbing and Electrical Installations
Electricians and plumbers use hex long nuts to extend conduit rods or ground rods, or to connect threaded pipes in non-pressurized systems.
4. Automotive and Aerospace
In automotive repair or aircraft systems, hex long nuts help connect control rods or adjust mechanical linkages.
5. Agricultural Equipment
Used to extend or repair mechanical parts in tillers, planters, and irrigation systems.
